Doc Gynéco

Dangerous Liaisons

01/12/1998 -

Bruno Beausire, better known to rap fans as the notorious Doc Gynéco - yes, his name really does mean Doc Gynaecologist! - exploded onto the French music scene three years ago with an incendiary debut album entitled "Première Consultation" (First Medical Visit). Since then Doc's witty but cynical lyrics and his hard-hitting rap style have earned the singer a committed following of fans. And French school children up and down the country now spend their playtime rapping out the catchy chorus to Doc's best-selling single "Viens voir le Docteur" (Go See The Doctor)!

Besides rocketing to the top of the charts and selling over a million CD albums in France, Doc has also become a regular guest star on a host of French rap albums. The popular French rapper has collaborated on all the solo albums recorded by members of the notorious rap posse Secteur Ä (guesting on albums by Stomy Bugsy, Passi, and Janik Ärsenik c.f. Le Petit Journal's archive section). He has also been kept extremely busy touring, songwriting and enjoying a much-publicised relationship with a French TV star. But none of this has stopped the dread-locked Doc from working away on his ambitious new album.

Doc's new album takes its name from Roger Vadim's cult film "Liaisons Dangereuses" (you know, the one in which Gérard Philipe and Jeanne Moreau commit countless acts of debauchery!) And, it must be said, most of the lyrics on Doc's new album live up to the film's salacious title! This new album was certainly long in the making - the remixing and recording of "Liaisons Dangereuses" took more than THREE years to complete. What's more, the EIGHTEEN tracks on Doc's new album required the remarkable feat of mobilising nearly THIRTY French guest stars in the studio, in order to record the SIXTY-FIVE minutes and FIVE seconds of organised chaos that make up these musical "liaisons"!

It's true that most of the guest stars on Doc's new album happen to be his old buddies from Secteur Ä - France's leading hip hop posse from the "Golden Triangle" of the Paris suburbs Sarcelles/Garches-les-Gonesses/ and Villiers-le-bel (homeland of the famous Ministère Amer). But Doc Gynéco has also included a few surprises on his new opus, collaborating, for example, with the disgraced politician and businessman Bernard Tapie (who recently did a short spell in French jail after being found guilty of fraud and fixing football matches!) Gynéco and Tapie indulge in a spot of musical therapy, teaming up to duet on the surreal but ultimately very funky, track "C'est beau la vie" ("It's A Wonderful Life"!) This gloriously cynical song gives Doc and Bernie the chance to rap on about life, rap, football, miscarriages of justice and the Ministries "who are running the whole affair".

Doc also - rather unexpectedly - teams up with veteran French protest singer Renaud to perform a joint cover of Renaud's legendary 70's hit "Hexagone". The hard-hitting lyrics of the song (which rages against social injustice and inequality) remain as relevant as ever, and undoubtedly make this the most outstanding track on Doc's new album. The divine alternative pop diva Catherine Ringer (of "Les Rita Mitsouko" fame) also puts in an appearance on Doc's "Liaisons Dangereuses", teaming up with rap novices MC Jean Gabin and Cochise on the song "Paranoïa" (which, it must be said, fits the feisty Ms. Ringer like a glove!) French ragga star Tonton David also gets a look-in on the excellent "Simplet Funky".

But these high-profile stars represent only the tip of the iceberg. Doc's new album also passes the mike to a whole host of budding French rap MCs such as 14-year-old star Tequila (the younger brother of Janik Ärsenik) and the talented young rap divas Assia and Nemessis. All in all, we advise you to pay a visit to Doc Gynéco's musical surgery as soon as possible - his witty, cynical rap style should be consumed at once and WITHOUT moderation!
